Fashion Talk #3: Trash or treasure?
In 2020 De Wasserij will frequently invite experts from the fashion field. In our Fashion Talks, we invite them to exchange thoughts and knowledge with our residents, and with the public. During the Getting Closer Fashion Festival we will kick off with no less than four talks!
On Sunday host Nanette Hogervorst (fashion platform Our World) meets Monique Drent from Awearness Kollektif and Nina Law & Nandi Dmyszewicz from fashion label KIZU. This year, Monique took the initiative for SwapShop 010, the first exchange store for clothing in the Netherlands. In the talk she will share how, in her view, swapping is going to change the future of fashion. In the same year as SwapShop 010, Nina and Nandi created their label KIZU. KIZU transforms clothing waste into new timeless items. Nanette will speak to Nina and Nandi about their passion for circularity and their partnership with the city of Rotterdam.
Monique Drent
Monique Drent is one of the founders of Awearness Kollektif, a platform that is committed to banning fast fashion from our society. Together with co-founder Laura Suijkerbuijk, she started SwapShop 010, a store where you do not buy new clothes, but where you people can exchange used clothes with each other. During a backpacking trip in 2012, Monique discovered that you really need very little to be happy. As an activist and connector, she has since been committed to contributing to a healthy fashion system with as little waste as possible.
KIZU
238 million kilos of clothing is discarded by the consumer in the Netherlands every year. To bring about change, a sustainable use of our clothing is necessary. In addition, circularity must become a central theme in the production of clothing. KIZU uses discarded jeans to create new unique clothing items with an personal touch. In today’s society, the aging of clothing is often seen as a loss of its value. Inspired by the Japanese wabi sabi philosophy, KIZU shows that the aging of clothing can actually create extra value, by making the traces of life visible.
